Dieting pervert gets four years

FORMER TV dieting star Barry Bethell was jailed for four years yesterday for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

The 66-year-old DJ - famous as the face of Slim-Fast in the 1990s - had lured the youngster to his home by claiming he could make her a pop star and model.

Bethell, of Whitstable, Kent, had also been convicted last month of taking indecent images of a child - but cleared of assaulting a second girl.

Judge Adele Williams told him at Canterbury Crown Court: "You do not begin to recognise the damage you have caused."

Former Kent DJ Barry Bethell has been sentenced to four years in prison - after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

The 66-year-old from Kimberley Grove in Seasalter was found guilty last month of sexually assaulting a young girl and taking indecent photos of children.

Bethell's £300,000 house in Seasalter, Whitstable, Kent,  is empty and up for sale.

Officer in the case Det Con Mark Butler said: "Kent Police welcomes today's sentencing. Barry Bethell has denied the offences and has refused to assist police throughout the case.

"The children involved showed great courage by telling an adult and also going through the experience of giving evidence to police and to the court.

"The investigation was painstaking and detailed and carried out by officers from East Kent including those from the public protection team in Canterbury, the area's specialist search officers as well as Kent Police's Digital Forensics Unit."

Barry Bethell attemted to become Rockin Dave's Manager when Bethell was working as an A & R manager for RCA records during the early '80's. (Luckily Dave turned him down!)
